Modern Era of Tatoos

The word "tattoo" is a borrowing of the Samoan word tatau, meaning to mark or strike twice (the latter referring to traditional methods of applying the designs). Tattooing has been practiced worldwide. Despite some taboos surrounding tattooing, the art continues to be popular in many parts of the world.

Tattoos are created by inserting colored materials inside the skin's surface. The first tattoos probably were created by an accident. Someone had a small wound, and rubbed it with soot and ashes from a fire. Once the wound had healed, they saw that a mark stayed permanently. 29 more images of modern era tatoos after the jump.

London Festival of Architecture (LFA)

London Festival of Architecture (LFA), held in July, completed its work and was described as "unexpected" event in the British capital.  Organizers did not expect such excitement at the festival, because he is being held annually.  Only on rough estimates, the event was visited by around 60 000 people!  The festival lasted one month, during which not only professionals but also ordinary students could participate in the discussion of architectural innovations and development of industrial design.

The Lantern Festival in China

The Lantern Festival or (Yuanxiao Festival), also known as the Shang Yuan Festival is a Chinese festival celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in the lunar year in the Chinese calendar. It is not to be confused with the Mid-Autumn Festival, which is also sometimes known as the "Lantern Festival" in locations such as Singapore, and Malaysia. During the Lantern Festival, children go out at night to temples carrying rabbit-shaped lanterns and solve riddles on the lanterns. It officially ends Chinese New year. 23 more images of this amazing festival after the jump.

The war in South Ossetia

On Thursday, August 7th, Georgian armed forces entered into the breakaway region of South Ossetia to assert Georgian governance of the region - a de facto (yet largely unrecognized) independent republic that has support from neighboring Russia. Russia responded on August 8th by sending its own military into Georgia - not only into region of South Ossetia - but also into the nearby breakaway republic of Abkhazia and deeper into Georgia itself. Many Airstrikes and ground skirmishes have taken place since, with several parties calling for a cease-fire, but no agreement as yet.

Those paying the highest price for the war are the South Ossetian civilians, which may have suffered (depending on who is reporting) between 100 and 2,000 deaths to date. 32 more images of this war after the jump.
