Have you been to Nepal? If the answer to that question is no then you really need to start planning a trip as soon as possible. The country is absolutely amazing and has something for any type of traveler. I have just returned from volunteering in Nepal and I can’t recommend it enough.
People fall in love with Nepal for a number of reasons; the trekking, people, culture, weather, food and much more. I couldn’t choose which one thing was my favourite but I do know that volunteering in Nepal is something we would all enjoy and should try at least once.
You don’t have to volunteer for the whole time you’re in the country, you can always go trekking in the Himalayas before or after your volunteer placement. Giving back whilst you’re on holiday is something very worthwhile and if done correctly will mean you’re a very responsible tourist indeed.
So what did I learn from my volunteering experience in Nepal and why am I so keen to recommend it to you guys? Here are 2 reasons which will explain it all.
Immerse Yourself In The Culture
When we travel we’re always looking to experience as much of the local culture as possible, it’s something we crave. Unfortunately, we may not always find what we’re looking for because visiting the big tourist sights and staying in guest houses with fellow travellers can hide the real culture from us. When you volunteer and you live with local people your eyes are opened to daily life, traditions, customs and interactions. I have always learnt so much about the local culture when I volunteer because I’m right in the middle of it! Also, people are much more open to share things with you and chat if you’re there to help.
You’re Doing Something Positive
When you travel to a country you are of course putting money in the economy which will hopefully have a positive impact. I know from personal experience that when I’m in developing countries I may see people who are struggling and I wish I could help in some small way – it’s pretty difficult trying to do something if you’re just passing through. Volunteering allows you to giveback to the country you’re travelling in and leave a lasting impact. The key thing here is having an impact, there are plenty of volunteer programs out there so you need to make sure you choose one that benefits the community. You don’t want to join a program and then realise it’s a bad one, so do your due diligence, research, read reviews and make an informed decision.
